Using minimalism to intentionally design your business so you don't burn out
“My values are simplicity and minimalism, but my business was so far from those values. No wonder I was burning myself out.”
Back in 2018, I experienced huge burnout. My whole life crumbled out from under me. And my body shut down.
I headed to Vanuatu, sat in a forest and for two months, I pondered on how I’d got my life so wrong.
When I returned from that trip, I vowed to do business (and life!) differently, never again wanting to put my body, spirit and mind through that kind of pain.
I would say, two years on, I’m about 85%-90% healed of my burnout. They say it takes about two years to recover. And I would agree. It’s been a long journey. I would also say, I’m starting to feel ready to share my discoveries and learnings.
Last week, I sat down with Lynda from Valo Financial and for the first time, openly shared what I have discovered about designing a minimal, intentional, sustainable business.
Lynda and I chat about:
Where the idea for business minimalism came from
How I’ve designed my offerings to meld together my values, personal preferences, financial needs and client needs
How taking big scary business risks and financial leaps (like quitting jobs to go full time in my biz) has never really worked for me and what I do now to nourish my nervous system while also thriving in my biz.
My idea that heart-based business owners are facing an epidemic of ‘moral burnout’ – a detachment from ourselves in the pursuit of capitalistic ‘success’ – and what we can do about it
And there’s lots of my own story intertwined throughout
